A few days in Scotland for a family memorial
100 Years ago my wife’s great grandfather died in the first world war.
The family are commemorating the centenary of the death of the Rev. John Davis, minister of Buittle parish church, who died on 22 July 1917 on active service with the Royal Army Medical Corps in Mesopotamia. A service of remembrance is being held on 29th July 2017, this date fits around family commitments.
Full details of the life history and military service of John Davis can be found on this site: http://www.ministerinmesopotamia.com/
Our trip started early on the 28th of July, the aim was to be in Scotland for early evening. We hired a motor-home from https://gosouthwestmotorhomehire.com/ and left early on the 28th, travelling along the A30, M5, M6, A74(M) and finally onto the A75 into Castle Douglas. All went well, the A30 was clear, M5 was ok and we stopped for breakfast at Gloucester. Around Birmingham the traffic ground to a halt, the raised section was being resurfaced and was solid traffic, around an hours delay here. Continuing up we hit traffic jam after traffic jam.
We aimed to get to tBay services for 5pm, have food and then it was only 1.5 hrs from there to our campsite, due to traffic we did not get to tBay until 7:30, luckily they had a campsite at the services and we could stay the night. Early next morning we set off for the last leg into Scotland.
The weekend was great, lost of family for us to chat too, some of which we had not seen since our wedding.
We left Scotland on the Monday morning and headed to Coniston water in the Lake District for a few days, very relaxing and enjoyable place.01
